Black Star lecture on ONE Festival in The Hague

Saturday 20 September 2014 from 4:00 PM till 5:15 PM
Bar en Poppodium de Supermarkt - Den Haag

During the new yearly Just Peace weekend (September 19 till 21) in The Hague, the international city of peace and justice, we celebrate the worldwide United Nations Day of Peace!

For the Just Peace weekend, Black Star Foundation will present an interesting reggae program. Come to the ONE Festival in The Supermarkt in The Hague on Saturday 20 September 2014 for a special musical lecture about Bob Marley and reggae music!

Musical lecture
Black Star Foundation (Amsterdam) wants to tell the audience more about the backgrounds of reggae music. That’s why the foundation developed different musical lectures, like about Bob Marley, reggae and the development of Jamaican popmusic. We have done these lectures several times, e.g. as a pre-show for the concert of The Rootsriders (Tribute to Bob Marley band) during their theatre- and club tours (2008 - 2011).

For the Peace weekend in The Hague we have developed a special musical lecture, focussed on the performance of Bob Marley & The Wailers in the Houtrusthallen in The Hague (1977) and we will pay special attention to how Bob Marley contributed to the peace, justice and harmony in his country Jamaica, but also worldwide. Bob Marley received the The Peace Medal of the Third World by the United Nations (1978).

Spreakers
The speakers for the lectures, Dr. Tim (researcher and teacher at the University Utrecht) and Michelle (founder of Black Star Foundation) are both reggae lovers. They can talk very lively about reggae music and Jamaica, the island they regularly visit. Their stories will be supported by vision and sound (DJ Den-Den, Black Star Sound).

  • Dr. Tim Boekhout van Solinge is researcher and teacher at the University Utrecht (Law, Criminology). Tim wrote his thesis (1994) about the social backgrounds of Jamaican music and culture, and therefor he stayed in Kingston, Jamaica for six months. In that period Tim spoke and interviewed a lot of Jamaican reggae artists. He still gives lectures about Jamaican reggae music on a regular base.
  • Michelle Boekhout van Solinge is the founder and driving force behind Black Star Foundation. She is working in the Dutch music industry for more than 10 years. Michelle is a big reggae lover and she is mostly working on management and bookings for reggae artists/bands, (online) promotion, organisation of events and concerts and the development of new talent.
